Prometheus took a risk when he stole fire from the gods to bring knowledge and civilization to humans. He sacrificed himself in doing so. The price of his sacrifice was to be nailed to a mountain where an eagle continually ate his immortal liver. He was later redeemed for his compassion toward humanity.
